When I was just twenty years old, I looked into enrolling in a local cosmetology school after I was offered an apprenticeship position at a very reputable hair studio in Ellicott City. I jumped at the opportunity. I had heard so many positive things about completing a two-year apprenticeship in a hands-on atmosphere. It was then I decided to pursue what I was truly passionate about: hair design, makeup artistry, and frankly any line of work that included the expression of art through beauty and fashion.

At first, the apprenticeship was very intimidating because I did not have any training. I did not even know which hand to hold the blow dryer in! My mentor really threw me right into assisting her with blow-outs, root color touchups, shampooing and, soon thereafter, makeup application. After a couple of months of panic, I began to realize that I really did have a knack for this. I then quickly began to develop my own tastes and ideas about the aesthetics of hair design and color.

After about fourteen months I began to take clients under apprenticeship licensing. From there both my skill level and confidence increased. Confidence takes time in this industry; and that was very frustrating because I had always been a very quick learner. Over time, I began to love my line of work because it gave me the opportunity to express myself artistically. It was like everyone was walking around with my art sitting atop their head. Not only that, but I got the chance to make women and men feel really great about the way that they looked. Over time, I began to build up a steady book of clients and became rather busy from all the recommendations from satisfied clients. This led to greater challenges with color application such as color foil placements, avant-garde techniques, and color correction. I also discovered how so much volume, style, and texture can be achieved through different cutting techniques and the use of an array of cutting tools like razors and texturizing shears.

I have been a stylist here at True Colors Hair Salon for over four years and I really love it. It is great to work in a salon that specializes in color because it is what I enjoy the most. I have learned so much from Kathy and Heather; and I have been able to share my techniques as well. My job is always fun because of the artistic expression and confidence I have to give both new and returning customers.
